Apartheid consists of hundreds of laws that allow the ruling white minority in South Africa to segregate, exploit and terrorize the vast majority: Africans, mostly, but also Asians and Coloureds - people of mixed race. Under Apartheid, racist beliefs are enshrined in law and any criticism of the law is cruelly suppressed.

Caption Description The Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) this afternoon approved an amended text of a draft convention on the suppression and punishment of the crime of apartheid. It also adopted a draft resolution in which all States would be called on to sign and ratify the convention as soon as possible. The final vote on the draft convention, as amended in the course of a series of votes on each paragraph of the preamble and on each article, was 93 votes in favour to 1 against (Portugal), with 24 abstentions.
