A Family of Palestine Refugees in the Gaza Strip
Caption Description
This picture is part of a series that illustrates the daily life of a Palestine refugee family in the Gaza strip. Nimer Muhammad Shurbaji, the father, is 35 years old; he was born in Jaffa, Palestine. Although not rich, he was relatively well off before the war; he owned a house, worked as a driver for the post office, and had a small private income. The war forced him to leave Jaffa in April 1948, and he stayed in camps in Egypt until 1949, when he was brought to Gaza with his family. They have spent the last five years in Magazi camp, together with some 7,900 other people (1,635 families). He is not working and depends on relief from UNRWA; to keep himself busy, he does voluntary work for the Egyptian lieutenant in charge of the camp. He lives in two rooms with his wife, six children (1 to 10 years of age), and his mother.
We see here Nimer Muhammad Shurbaji (left) with some of the members of his family. [Magazi Camp, near Gaza]
