Cameroon Ratifies Cocoa Agreement
Caption Description
Cameroon today ratified the International Cocoa Agreement, 1972. A declaration of provisional application was received from the Cameroon on 10 April. The Agreement was adopted at Geneva on 21 October 1972 by the U.N. Cocoa Conference, convened by the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The objectives of the Agreement are mainly to prevent excessive fluctuation in the price of cocoa which affects adversely the long-term interests of both producers and consumers. An International Cocoa Council would be set up to supervise the operations of the provisions of the Agreement. The main features of the Agreement are an export quota system, a fixed price range for cocoa and a buffer stock mechanism.
Ambassador Michel Njine, Permanent Representative of Cameroon depositing the instrument of ratification with Mr. F. Blaine Sloan, Director of the U.N. General Legal Division.
