Cambodia complained that since 1949 Thailand had persisted in the occupation of a portion of Cambodian territory where there are the ruins of a holy monastery, the Temple of Preah Vihear. In its judgment on the merits, the International Court of Justice found that the Temple was situated on Cambodian Territory.

The ICJ’s role is to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States (its Judgments are final and binding) and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized UN organs and agencies. Its official languages are English and French. ICJ news and archives can be accessed via its Website (icj-cij.org).

Headline Egyptian War Prisoners Returned by Israel
Caption Description A convoy of UNEF trucks loaded with Egyptian war prisoners arriving near Misfaq.

The Egyptian war prisoners captured by Israel have been returned to their country. The repatriation took place in the Sinai peninsula between 21 January and 3 February, through the good offices of the U.N. Emergency Force (UNEF).

The Israeli authorities handed over the war prisoners to UNEF - who in turn handed them over to the Egyptian authorities - at the rate of 500 per day. Four Israeli prisoners of war were returned on the 27th, and a last group of 202 Egyptians were handed over yesterday. The transfer was observed by two delegates from the International Committee of the Red Cross --one from Israel, one from Egypt- and UNEF provided transport to the railroad station of Misfaq, where the groups were turned over to the Egyptian authorities.
