Headline
UNEF Troops from Sweden on Patrol
Caption Description
The first contingent of the United Nations Emergency Force arrived in Egypt on 15 November 1956, their initial task to stand between the opposing forces during the withdrawal of Anglo-French and Israeli troops. Today, some 5,500 officers and men from eight countries are on duty, maintaining a night-and-day vigil along the Armistice Demarcation Line between Egypt and Israel.
Private Bertil Persson, a Swedish soldier of UNEF, is seen starting 13 hours of observation at the Demarcation Line. His company is guarding the Line at Es Sirah south of Gaza Town. Pte Persson's work in the Gaza Strip is usually one day observation, one day sentry in the camp and night patrol, and one day camp duty.
