International Exhibition Commemorating World AIDS Day Open at United Nations Headquarters
Caption Description
An international exhibition of quilts representing the names of over 10,000 people who have died of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) opened this evening at United Nations headquarters on the occasion of world AIDS day (1 December). Called the ‘’AIDS Memorial Quilt’’, the project is organized by the Names Project Foundation, which actively solicits the submission of Memorial Quilt sections from all countries. Other portions of this international exhibition are on display in over thirty cities throughout the world and the United States. The UN system, led by the World Health Organization, is now fully engaged in the struggle against AIDS.
Rafeeuddin Ahmed, Chairman of the UN Steering Committee for the Prevention and Control of AIDS, speaks at the opening ceremony. On the right is Mrs. M Perez de Cuellar, wife of the UN Secretary-General.
