The Dag Hammerskjold Library Building at UN Headquarters
Caption Description
A view of the Dag Hammarskjold Library building (foreground) at United Nations Headquarters, showing the Southern facade of the building. Built with a 6,200,000 grant from the Ford Foundation, the building was formally dedicated on 16 November 1961.
Designed by the firm of Harrison, Abramowitz and Harris, architectural consultants to the United Nations, the building is 219 feet long and 83 feet wide in its overall dimensions. The whole edifice is designed to allow the greatest possible amount of light and sunshine. The 83-ft-wide east and west walls are made of the same white marble as the other UN buildings, but the 219-ft-long north and south facades consist entirely of glass and aluminum, giving the whole structure an aspect of luminous transparency.
