SvalSat is located close to Longyearbyen and is recognized as the best-located ground station in the world for satellite observations. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited the region to observe first-hand the effects of climate change and this visit focused on using satellite data for improved climate change adaptation and to reduce the risk of climate-related hazards.
