United Nations Volunteers (UNV) in Yemen
Caption Description
UN Volunteer Enrique Isagon (right), 24, Mining Engineer from the Philippines, and Ernest Latham, Civil Engineer from the United Kingdom, with Yemeni Farmhand at irrigation reservoir developed as part of the Food and Agriculture Organization project to determine agricultural potential of semi-arid Tihamah lowlands coastal area in Yemen Arab Republic. The project, financed by U.N. Development Programme, includes a demonstration farm near Wadi Zabid now run by the Yemeni government, which has set increased farm output as the country's primary development goal.
The UNV, established by the General Assembly in December 1970, is operated by the Administrator of the U.N. Development Programme. Designed to enlist the participation of skilled men and woman from both developed and developing countries in development projects assisted by the U.N. family of organizations, UNV began operations in January 1971, and now has about 200 U.N. volunteers serving in 15 developing countries around the world. The programme is voluntarily financed by Governments, non-governmental organizations and individuals.
