Cholera Treatment and Vaccination Campaign at UNMISS PoC, Juba
Caption Description
On 23 June the Ministry of Health of South Sudan declared an outbreak of cholera in Juba County. The initial cases in Juba were traced back to 18 May 2015 in UN House PoC (Protection of Civilians site), where the first cholera case was confirmed on 1 June 2015. According to a WHO (World Health Organization) update, as of 25 June 2015, a total of 268 cholera cases including 20 deaths have been reported from 55 villages in eight payams of Juba County.
UNICEF (UN Children’s Fund) and WHO have mounted an outbreak response led by the Ministry of Health, a press statement issued by the UN children's agency on 23 June stated. The response includes providing medical supplies and scaling up preventative measures, including cholera vaccinations and hygiene promotion. As part of the response, the International Medical Corps (IMC) and MAGNA (Magna Children at Risk) are treating cholera patients and providing immunization to more than 28,000 internally displaced persons at UN base protection site (PoC) in Juba.
