The Secretary-General of the U.N. in New Delhi
Caption Description
U.N. Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld is on his way to Peiping, where he will hold discussions with the Prime Minister of the Chinese People's Republic in fulfillment of the Assembly's request that he seek the release of all U.N. Command personnel detained against their will, including 11 U.S. airmen sentenced to imprisonment on espionage charges. Mr. Hammarskjöld left New York on 30 December, accompanied by a party of six, and arrived in New Delhi yesterday afternoon after brief stops in London, Paris and Karachi.
This picture, taken this afternoon at New Delhi's Palam Airport, shows Mr. Shen Chien, Chargé d'Affaires of the Chinese People's Republic in New Delhi, shaking hands with Mr. Dag Hammarskjöld, as the latter was about to resume his journey. Looking on are Mr. G.H. Middleton (left), Deputy High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in India, and Mr. Donald D. Kennedy, Chargé d'Affaires of the United States of America.
