Headline Yugoslavia Donates Equestrian Statue to U.N. Headquarters
Caption Description At a brief ceremony this afternoon in the north gardens of the U.N. General Assembly area, an equestrian statue symbolizing Peace was formally presented to the United Nations as a gift to U.N. Headquarters from the Government of Yugoslavia. Stating that the gift symbolized the Yugoslav people's desire for peace, their devotion to the United Nations Charter and their faith in the future of the Organization, Ambassador Joza Brilej, Yugoslavia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, made the presentation, and Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld accepted the gift on behalf of the United Nations. The 16-foot high bronze statue of a woman on horseback stands on a 26-foot high pedestal faced with blocks of rose-colored marble quarried in Yugoslavia. It is the work of Mr. Antun Augustincic, a Yugoslav sculptor.
Here, at the conclusion of the unveiling ceremony, Ambassador Joza Briley (left) and U.N. Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld (right) shake hands in front of the statue. Looking on Dr. Eelco N. Van Kleffens, President of the current session of the United Nations General Assembly.
