The New UNESCO House in Paris
Caption Description
The new buildings, which will house the offices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in Paris, will be officially opened to the public on 3 November 1958 in the presence of the diplomatic corps and representatives of UNESCO’s 79 Member States. Designed by a panel of international architects and decorated with gifts from Member Governments, UNESCO's new permanent headquarters covers a seven and a half acre site fronting the Place de Fontenoy, which was placed at UNESCO’s disposal by the French Government.
Here is a view of one of the buildings - the Secretariat -- a Y-shaped, seven-storey building raised on ""pilotis"" and walled with glass. There are two other main units -- a conference building with fluted concrete sides and a ""butterfly"" roof; and a smaller, square four-storey building to house permanent delegations to UNESCO and non-governmental organizations.
