A view of the sun rising behind Long Island City and the sculpture, "Good Defeats Evil", by Zurab Tsereteli, in the north garden area of UN Headquarters. The sculpture depicts St. George slaying the dragon. The Dragon here is made from actual parts of a Soviet SS-20 and an American Pershing II nuclear missiles, and represents the specter of nuclear war. The sculpture was presented to the UN by the Soviet Union in 1990 and commemorates the dismantling of the missiles under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty signed 8 December, 1987 by Presidents Ronald Reagan of the United States and Mikhail Gorbachev of the Soviet Union.

Headline ""War"" and ""Peace"" Murals, Brazil’s Gift to U.N. Headquarters 
Caption Description Visitors to the United Nations will shortly be viewing two huge murals - one depicting war, the other, peace - which are new being mounted on the east and west walls of the delegates’ lobby in the General Assembly building. Executed by Candido Portinari, the best known of Brazilian painters, both murals measure 34 by 46 feet and are a gift of the Brazilian Government. Sketches of the murals were submitted to the United Nations Board of Art Advisers at the end of 1952, for their approval. The Board found them ""extremely stimulating in color design and composition"" and indicated that the final paintings would be ""a most handsome addition to the embellishment of the United Nations Permanent Headquarters"". The first mural, ""War"", was completed in August 1955 and the second early in 1956. Both are executed in oil on six-sheet cedar plywood, of the type usually employed for passenger aircraft partitions.
Here are some of the panels from the murals as they were unveiled for mounting. lt is expected that the work of mounting them on the walls will be completed before the opening of the 12th regular session of the Assembly on 17 September.
