Assistance to the Survey Department of Jamaica
Caption Description
The implementation of many projects in the Five Year Independence Plan (1963-1968) in Jamaica, such as irrigation and flood control, watershed protection, groundwater and geological survey, agricultural and forestry development, land settlement and land reform, created a great need for new maps. To meet this need, the Government of Jamaica, with the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with the United Nations as Executing Agency, established a photogrammetric map-compilation section within the framework of the Mapping Office of the Survey Department in Kingston. The project, in providing for the training of personnel in photogrammetric mapping and map preparation techniques, gives the Survey Department the trained personnel and equipment required for the establishment of an orderly plan of mapping the island; provides for preparation of manuscript maps available from private sources for incorporation in a uniform standard map series in the scale of 1:12,500; allows surveys to be taken of specific high priority projects as required.
As a surveyor uses a stereoscope to identify a detail point on an aerial photograph, an assistant marks the point number on a post at its actual location in the Montego Bay area of Jamaica. [No exact date]
