International Help for Europe's Refugees
Caption Description
Of the two million refugees at present within the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees' mandate, more than100,000 are still in camp and 500,000 have not yet found a solution to their problems. There are three possible solutions: repatriation, resettlement and integration. The first attracts only a few; resettlement overseas is the solution desired by most, unfortunately not everyone qualifies; integration into the economic life of the country of asylum, wherever that is possible, must therefore be energetically promoted.
This picture shows part of Camp Simmering Heide, in Vienna, Austria, where 1,200 Volksdeutsches(former German minorities) refugees live. The camp is composed of 27 barracks, five of which were built last year.
