Anti-Desert Locust Research Centre in London
Caption Description
The world's desert locust zone is an area covering 65 countries and territories on three continents where each year more than 18 million dollars’ worth of crops are destroyed by locusts. The battle against this age-old plague is now organized on an international scale - often with United Nations participation.
One of the foremost research centres is the Anti-Desert Locust Research Centre in London which for many years has amassed data and initiated biological, geographical, physiological and meteorological research into the problem. It receives information from the field on locust breeding and movements and publishes this news in a monthly bulletin. It issues special warnings when appropriate so that the threatened countries - often in a concerted international effort - can organize to combat the swarms. At present, jointly with the Centre, and with the cooperation of the East Africa High Commission, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has two expert meteorologists in Kenya working on establishing the relation of locust behavior to weather; and with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) two scientists are conducting an ecological survey of locust breeding places.
Preparation of the monthly summary of migration and breeding of desert locust over the vast area shown on map in background. [No exact date]
