World-Renowned Musicians Heard in United Nations Day Concert
Caption Description
A special concert was held today in the Salle Pleyel in celebration of United Nations Day as part of an international broadcast heard simultaneously on four continents. The concert combined performances by world-famous soloists and orchestras playing in New York, Paris and Geneva. The Salle Pleyel concert was a highlight of the “Semaines Musicales de Paris”, a five-week festival organized by the International Music Council under the auspices of UNESCO.
Seen here just before the concert in the Salle Pleyel are three of the participants: violinists Yehudi Menuhin (USA), at left, and David Oistrakh (USSR) at right; and in the center is the Indian artist, Ravi Shankar. Mr. Menuhin and Mr. Oistrakh performed Bach’s Double Violin Concerto in D Minor with the Orchestre de Chambre de la Radiodiffusion-Television Francaise conducted by Pierre Capdevielle.
