Headline Engineering Study for Owendo-Belinga Railway, Garbon
Caption Description The Government of Gabon, assisted by the UN Development Programme with the International Bank for Reconstruction & Development as executing agency, has organized a final engineering study for constructing a railway to carry high-
grade iron ore from the rich deposits in the Makokou-Mekambo area to the coast. The study will include comprehensive soil investigation, topographic surveys and the preparation of detailed drawings and specifications for construction and equipment. The U.S. firm of Foley Bros. and the French firm of Sofrerail are consultants for the study, and will also formulate a programme for the organization, management and operation of the railway, which will run from
Belinga in the northeast to Owendo, a seaport near the capital, Libreville.  It
is estimated that by 1975 the railway could carry about eight million tons of
iron ore a year to the coast. In addition, it will contribute to the expansion
of forest industries and open up the north-eastern region to other developments.
