United Nations Assists Barbados in Traffic Improvement Plan
Caption Description
The island of Barbados is 166 square miles and, with 1,500 persons per square mile, its population density is among the highest in the world. Since the roads are very narrow and the traffic of great variety, ranging from bicycles, buses, cars, donkey carts to pedestrians, the situation has presented difficulties. These are now further aggravated by the increase in tourism and industry the traffic problem has become acute. The Government of Barbados, through its Traffic Department, is attempting to solve the problem by installing new parking signs, developing car parks, designing roundabouts, installing road markets and designating one-way streets. The United Nations is giving assistance through the appointment of Mr. G. Nimmerfjord (Sweden), a traffic expert, who is working with the Traffic Department.
