U.N. Experts Draft International Convention for Uniform Road Signs and Signals
Caption Description
After twenty months of work, the group of six experts appointed by the U.N. Secretary-General in 1950 to draft an international convention establishing a uniform system of road signs, signals and pavement markings concluded its third and final session on 18 July 1952. The recommendations of the group now go to the U.N. Transport and Communications Commission and the Economic and Social Council for further action. The draft convention is based on scientific and practical studies by the experts. The system proposed, in which the symbols, colors and shapes of signs (some of which are reproduced in this photograph) are uniform, would - they believe - enable international highway users to understand road signs even though they did not understand the country’s language.
