Energy in the 21st Century / The Alternatives
Caption Description
The high price of oil, increasing worldwide demand for energy and awareness of the environmental problems associated with hydrocarbon fuels have made development of alternative energy sources essential. In August 1981, a United Nations Conference was held in Nairobi, Kenya, focusing on fourteen alternatives: solar energy, geothermal energy, hydropower, wind power, biomass, fuelwood and charcoal, oil shale and tar sands, ocean energy (thermal gradient, wave and tidal power), peat and energy from draught animals.
Ipil trees at an energy research facility near Manila. The trees are valuable for producing energy they grow fast and don’t require nitrogen fertilizer. Such trees can be cut down and used for fuelwood and are easily replaceable. [No exact date]
