Headline Afghanistan's Growing Tourist Trade

Caption Description Hidden away in the Hindu Kush Mountains lays the peaceful Bamian valley which at present is hardly known to the outside world, yet it is potentially a major tourist attraction. In the time of the Kushan Empire it formed part of an important caravan route through Central Asia. Missionaries carried the Buddhist faith along it from India into China. Between the 1st and 7th Centuries the town of Bamian, which lies in the centre of the valley, became a centre of the Buddhist religion. Thousands of monks lived in caves in the mountainsides and between the 2nd and 4th Centuries gigantic statues of Buddha were carved in a cliff face. The serenity of Bamian was shattered by the Mongol invasion at the beginning of the 13th Century.
To attract more tourists to the Bamian valley which entails a seven hour journey from Kabul over rough mountain roads, the Government of Afghanistan, with the assistance of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), is establishing and operating an air transportation service to remote areas utilizing Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) aircraft.
