Bulgaria Presents United Nations with Replica of a Mural Painting
Caption Description
Replica of a mural painting (fresco) of the double image of the Bulgarian, Sebastocrator Kaloyan, and his wife, Desislava, presented by the Bulgarian government to the United Nations in 1973. The original was painted inside Boyana Church near Sofia in 1259. In the painting, Sebastocrator Kaloyan is dressed in a dark blue tunic and a green robe, with a diadem on his forehead. In his hands he holds a model of the church. Desislava’s slender figure is attired in a green tunic under a golden Dalmatica and her oval face, under a small hat, is painted in rosy-white. Both portraits had been painted with mastery and demonstrate the skill of the painter who, to a certain extent, had managed to overcome the conventionality of the then canonical style. This represents a rare phenomenon in which one can see a deliberate and enforced departure from the rigid canonical methods and style of the medieval Byzantine art. The painting is installed on the Second floor of the Conference Building near the north delegate's lounge.
