Kente Tapestry Presented to the UN by Ghana
Caption Description
A view of the ""Kente"" which was presented to the UN in September 1960 by President Nkrumah as a gift from the people of Ghana. Kente is the Twi word for ""hand-woven cloth"". Hand-woven of pure silk in green, yellow and maroon with a sea-blue background, the pattern of the Kente was originally designed in the 18th century for the Ashanti Queen, Yaa Asantewa, known and esteemed for her practice of seeking counsel before making decisions. It has never before been owned or worn by anyone except kings and queens of the Ashanti people of Ghana. Measuring 19'9"" by 12'7"", the theme of the kente is ""Tikro Nnko Adjina"" (""One Head Cannot Go Into Council""). It was woven under the direction of Andrews Eugene Asare, of the Dento Mills in Nsawam, Ghana. It took 10 weavers three and a half months to complete it. [Exact date unknown].
