Bamiyan Province in Afghanistan (Background)
Caption Description
Hidden away in the Hindu Kush mountains in northern Afghanistan, the spectacular ruins of an ancient Buddhist settlement at Bamiyan are at present hardly known to the outside world. But the recent opening of a landing ground for small aircraft, which the Government decided to establish, assisted by the UN Development Programme with the International Civil Aviation Organization as executing agency, is expected to provide a great stimulus for tourists.
One of the best preserved Buddhas carved into the cliff face at Bamiyan. This gigantic figure was executed between the 2nd and 4th centuries by monks who lived in caves in the mountain side. [No exact date]
