The mission of Sweden’s emergency force in Peru - the first natural disaster unit to fly the United Nations flag - formally ended today with the signing of a tripartite agreement at United Nations Headquarters in New York today.
The Technical Cadre Unit of the Swedish Stand-By Force for United Nations service spent six months working to rehabilitate Andean areas severely damaged by the May 31 earthquake. The effective date of departure of the Swedish force was 20 March 1971.
Seen here signing the document which marked the official conclusion of the mission were: Constantin A. Stavropoulos, United Nations Legal Counsel (signing). At the left is Dr. Javier Perez de Cuellar, Permanent Representative of Peru to UN, and at the right is Olof Rydeck, Permanent Representative of Sweden to UN. Observing the signing is Col. Detlow Von Braun, who commanded the Swedish Unit in Peru.
