Headline Twelve Caribbean Countries to Expand Meteorological Services

Caption Description A plan of operation for a new four-year regional project to improve the Caribbean meteorological services -- including hurricane detection and warning systems -- was signed today at UN Headquarters by officials representing 12 of the 13 participating countries and territories and by the UN Development Programme (UNDP). The agreement provides for a Regional Meteorological Institute to be established in Barbados with training and research facilities, and for expansion of the network of meteorological and weather radar stations in the area. The UNDP and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) are also assisting six countries in the area in setting up a comprehensive regional network of hydro-meteorological and hydrological services under a project for which the operational plan was signed in May.
