Industrialisation Programme in Singapore
Caption Description
The Government of Singapore, through its Economic Development Board and with the assistance of the United Nations and several of the related agencies under the UN Development Programme (UNDP), has embarked on an intensive and rapid industrialization programme. The decision to provide an industrial base to the nation’s traditional economy was the result of studies and recommendations by a UN team of experts in 1961 which revealed that the entrepôt trade, the main source of income for Singapore, could not be relied on to support the fast-expanding, young population. The Light Industries Services (LIS) was established by Singapore’s Economic Development Boards with help from UNDP and the International Labour Organization (ILO). This unit promotes the development of small enterprises by providing assistance in technical know-how, management, finance and choice of factory sites and buildings. The LIS Demonstration and Training Services has set up a series of workshops to demonstrate better methods and techniques, machinery and equipment, and modern practice in production control and management.
