Headline Development of Primary Production in Singapore

Caption Description The Government of Singapore, through its Economic Development Board and with the assistance of the United Nations and several of the related agencies under the UN Development Programme (UNDP), has embarked on an intensive and rapid industrialization programme. Although agriculture and fisheries form only a small part of Singapore’s economic activity, special attention is being given to the development of this sector of the economy, particularly in poultry, pig and fish farming. The programmes are so successful that some primary products are now not only available in sufficient volume to satisfy local requirements but also to serve a growing export trade in neighbouring countries.
The UNDP, with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as Executing Agency, is assisting the Government through the establishment of the Pig and Poultry Research and Training Institute at Sembawang, Singapore.
Research in aquarium fish breeding, a fast growing commercial field, is also being carried out by the Singapore Government’s Primary Production Department. Han Chow Fong, a senior fisheries officer, examines a fish in the aquarium.
