Headline Development of Caspian Forests in Iran
Caption Description Iran is predominantly an arid country with the highest annual rainfall (200 mm) occurring in the Elburz Mountains where the country's richest forests are found. The population of these mountains lives by subsistence agriculture and by grazing herds of sheep and goats. Fuelwood, charcoal and building poles are obtained from the forests which, in general, are only lightly exploited. In 1966, the government of Iran, with the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) an executing agency, established a programme designed to intensity the development of forest resources through the introduction of modern utilization. A demonstration centre was set up and intensive forest management and exploitation techniques were carried out in a pilot zone and determination made on the optimum pattern of land-use.
A mobile saw will unit, which is under the charge of FAO forestry expert, C.F. Roetzer (Austria), is soon here in operation in the rich forest of the Project area of 25000 hectares above the Caspian.
