The Fountain at United Nations Headquarters
Caption Description
View of the circular fountain ornamenting the Secretariat Plaza at United Nations Headquarters, showing the southern façade of the General Assembly building and part of the Secretariat skyscraper in the background.
This fountain is a gift of the children of the United States and its territories who donated some $50,000 for its erection. An interesting feature of the fountain is the wavy pattern on the floor of the pool, formed by alternating bands of crushed white marble and black pebbles. The black stones, unobtainable from normal sources of supply, were gathered from the beaches of Rhodes by the women and children of this Greek island and donated to the U.N. [No exact date]
