The Ethiopian Steele (Obelisk)
Caption Description
Photograph of an ivory replica (65” tall) of an ancient steele, which was presented to the United Nations by His Imperial Majesty, Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia, during his official visit to United Nations Headquarters on 4 October 1963. The ancient steele on which the replica was modelled was found in Aksum, the centre of Ethiopia’s government for the first nine centuries of the Christian era. It is estimated that the monument was constructed around (the year) 327 A.D. The front elevation tapers slightly toward the summit and is crowned by a graceful headpiece which some have thought to represent the sun. It rises from the centre of the top of tower and curves outward in the shape of a semi-circle at the edge.
