Caption Description Many of the essential services needed for the maintenance of the United Nations building and for carrying out the Secretariat's work are performed on three floors beneath street level. Most of the mechanical equipment is to be found there, including the huge refrigeration plant which controls the air conditioning throughout the whole group of buildings. There, too, are the maintenance shops, a complete fire-fighting unit, a large printing and reproduction establishment, receiving and loading platform, storage areas, a three-level garage and an automobile service station.

In this wide-angle view operators may be seen in the background at work on a 20 pocket Sheridan gatherer with wire stitcher, one segment of the operation of the UN Publishing Service's Reproduction Section. [June 1969]
