Caption Description
The Medical Service of the United Nations, located on the fifth floor of the UN Secretariat building, maintains a fully-equipped medical clinic staffed by an international group of doctors, nurses and technicians, with supporting administrative personnel. The Service, through the Office of the Medical Director, establishes medical standards for the recruitment and placement of staff; advises the UN Staff Pension Committee and Advisory Board on Compensation Claims; approves sick leave and maternity leave; advises on medical services for UN Field missions; conducts regular inspections of the UN Headquarters complex and makes recommendations on such matters as lighting, ventilation, air conditioning and food-handling; and advises on medical and dental insurance arrangements. The Clinic serves the immediate needs of the Staff by conducting regular medical examinations, giving inoculations, first aid and emergency treatment, and advising Staff members in the selection of private physicians and specialists.
