General Assembly Admits Four New States to Membership in United Nations
Caption Description
The General Assembly, opening its seventeenth regular session, this afternoon admitted four new States to membership in the United Nations, thus bringing to 108 the number of Member Nations. The four new members are the Republic of Rwanda, the Kingdom of Burundi, Jamaica and the State of Trinidad and Tobago. The new members, previously recommended for admission by the Security Council, were admitted one by one, by acclamation. Following their admission, welcoming statements were made by a number of delegations.
Here is a view of the members of the Delegation of Jamaica shortly after they were escorted to their seats by the U.N. Chief of Protocol. At the desk are (right to left): H.E. Ambassador Egerton Richardson, Permanent Representative to the U.N.; the Hon. Donald Sangster, Minister of Finance; Senator Mrs. Esme Grant, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education; and Senator The Hon. Hugh L. Shearer, Leader of the Senate.
In the second row are (left to right) Mr. Keith Johnson, Consul-General Designate to New York; Mr. John. D. Silvera, and Mr. Probyn Marsh, First Secretary, Permanent Mission to the U.N.
