Caption Description
The achievement of equal rights for men and women has long occupied the attention of the United Nations. Since 1946, mainly through its Commission on the Status of Women, UN has worked to help effect the needed changes both in law and in fact. In 1967 the General Assembly unanimously adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, and later proclaimed 1975 as International Women’s Year (IWY) in an effort to stimulate new initiatives to re-evaluate traditional attitudes which have hindered the progress of women and to increase the participation of women in national, regional and international politics. The World Conference of the International Women’s Year opened at the Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium in Mexico City on 19 June 1975. There were 110 delegations represented at the opening session, with women delegates outnumbering the men by about six to one.
Mrs. Li Su-Wen, Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China, making a statement at the Conference. The general debate of the Conference continued on the afternoon of 23 June with statements by Italy, Indonesia, Soviet Union, Nigeria, Uganda, Greece, German Democratic Republic, China, France, and the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).
