Headline From Ruin to Survival: Reconstructing South Korea
Caption Description The Republic of Korea has rich deposits of gold, graphite, tungsten and coal, and there is enough lead, copper, bismuth and manganese to merit attention. There seems to be reasonable prospects of developing mineral exports to from 40 to 50 million dollars yearly but the country's mineral wealth has yet to be measured. The UN Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA) has, therefore, started what is in effect a national treasure hunt. It has built a mineral assay laboratory with the most modern equipment at Taejon, set up in agreement with the Government and the United Nations Command. UNKRA train the various technicians and experts needed by the mining industry and to help improve mining techniques.
Many Koreans caught prospecting fever when UNKRA opened the laboratory at Taejon. Each morning some arrive (as those in this photograph) with bags full of rocks for analysis, hoping they've made a rich find in the country's relatively untouched mineral deposits. [No exact date]
