A Hope for Korea's Orphans
Caption Description
One of the six units making up a combined model children's home and social workers' training centre has just been inaugurated just outside this capital city. An entirely new concept in institutions of its type, the specialized children's home was being built by the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs of the Republic of Korea with assistance from the UN Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA). Partially completed, the orphanage is already giving, some 280 children, whose only kinship is a common knowledge of disaster, privation and want, their first experience of a protected life. Set on a pleasantly wooded hillside, the centre at present consists of six cottages, a bath unit with laundry and barbershops attached, a warehouse and an administrative building. When completed will accommodate up to 400 orphans and destitute children from other parts of the country. At the training centre, a two-story building in the middle of the compound, still under construction, 22 trainees are learning modern methods of child care and management of orphanages in order to improve conditions in existing children's homes. This photo shows the completed cottage home. Under UNKRA's orphanage programme 62 institutions of various types have been built, giving shelter to some 6,600 children.
