Headline Farming for Development: New Cash Crops to Replace Opium in Thailand
Caption Description For some time to come the poorer countries of the world will have to rely on agriculture to raise their living standards and supply the capital they need to create industries. Agricultural production must therefore be increased. This requires tractors, fertilizers, new and better seeds, vast irrigation schemes, and land reforms.
Land being cleared to grow a cash crop. The world's first attempt between the United Nations and a national government to stamp out opium-growing has been launched in the hill tribe region of northwest Thailand. Attempts to find new cash crops to replace opium are being coordinated from a central training and extension centre at Chang Khian, a former opium growing area. [c. 1973]
