Handicrafts and Cottage Industries
Caption Description
The role of handicrafts, not just a source of personal satisfaction, but as a significant element in the economy, particularly of the developing countries, has become the subject of renewed interest in recent years. The production of essential and decorative articles for home and work as well as for sale in local markets or further field is an important means of absorbing unemployed and underemployed people, particularly during the slack season in rural communities. It is also an important way of integrating women in the development of their communities. The encouragement and training of craftsmen and craftswomen in new methods and techniques designed to upgrade the quality of their work and improve the production and marketing of finished goods, in textiles, pottery or carpentry, for example, as well as the provision of the necessary materials and tools and other sources, has become part of the effort to give these ancient activities new meaning and vitality.
Indian woman works at age-old craft near Cuzco, Peru. The designs of the woven fabrics in this area are similar to those found in the tombs of the ancient Incas, but Spain, too, has left its mark. One of the Indian' favourite designs is a stylized version of the two-headed eagle of the Hapsburg monarchs. [Exact date unknown]
