Caption Description An efficient, reliable and safe transportation system is essential to a nation’s economic and social development. In fact, for most countries, transportation represents a 6 to 10 percent share of the gross national product. In an effort to improve the transportation and communications facilities of developing countries in the Asia and Pacific region, particularly the least developed, land-locked and island developing countries, the General Assembly has declared 1985-1994 a Transport and Communications Decade for Asia and the Pacific.
