Bringing together participants from some 500 indigenous groups worldwide, the Forum is focusing on the theme ""Indigenous Children and Youth"". Women in indigenous costume participate in today's session.

A view of indigenous children from the Embera people, displaced by armed conflict. There are over two million internally displaced persons in Colombia and while forced displacement is always a very difficult experience, it is doubly catastrophic for indigenous communities. Indigenous culture is closely linked to the land and displacement often leads to the total collapse of traditional authority and cultural patterns.

Headline 1988-1997 World Decade for Cultural Development
Caption Description In 1988, the United Nations will launch the World Decade for Cultural Development, running from 1988-1997. The four main goals of the Decade are: to affirm cultural identity, ensure that the cultural dimension is taken into consideration in development, encourage participation of the public and artists in cultural life and to promote international cultural co-operation. Taking the lead in this effort is UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, which will serve as the co-coordinating point with other UN agencies working in support of the Decade.
