Masai youth in Tanzania.
A view of indigenous children from the Embera people, displaced by armed conflict. There are over two million internally displaced persons in Colombia and while forced displacement is always a very difficult experience, it is doubly catastrophic for indigenous communities. Indigenous culture is closely linked to the land and displacement often leads to the total collapse of traditional authority and cultural patterns.

Headline International Year of the World’s Indigenous People, 1993
Caption Description Heiltsuk women beat their deer-hide drums, symbolically reclaiming the beach where a fishing lodge has been built by the Columbia Fishing Group over an ancient midden of the village of Luxbalis.

The Qatuwas Festival, an international gathering of maritime indigenous nations of the Pacific Rim, was hosted this summer by the Heiltsuk Nation in their village of Bella Bella, approximately 350 miles up the British Columbia coast from Vancouver, Canada. The festival, held from 27 June to 3 July, coincided with the United Nations International Year of the World’s Indigenous People (1993). Qatuwas is a Heiltsuk word meaning “people gathering together in one place”.
