Caption Description
Secretary-General Kofi Annan visited South Africa from 7-10 July, 2002. He attended a two-day summit that transformed the Organization of African Unity (OAU) into the African Union.
The signing of a memorandum of understanding between the World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) took place in Durban on 9 July. The heads of the two agencies, James Morris (right), Executive Director of WFP, and Ruud Lubbers (left), High Commissioner of UNHCR, signed a memorandum strengthening their cooperation in providing food aid to refugees and returnees, which could help benefit some 20 million refugees around the world, more than a third of them in Africa. Secretary-General Kofi Annan is witnessing the signing.
