UNICEF Mobilizes Communities to Protect Against Spread of Ebola
Caption Description
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is mobilizing communities to protect themselves and prevent the further spread of Ebola. Aside from training their own staff, they trained internal and external partners involved in the fight against Ebola.
Since March 2014, UNICEF has been sensitizing the population all over Guinea and through different channels like public service announcements (PSAs) on radio and television, via Short Message Service text messages sent by mobile providers, through door-to-door campaigns, and by enlisting religious leaders, healers, hunters, fishermen, and others to relay pertinent information to their respective communities. Another vital component of sensitization efforts are Community Watch Committees (CWC), created in November 2014 and composed of local community members.
Among the three Ebola affected countries, Guinea is the one showing the biggest resistance towards health care workers, thought to be largely related to bad or insufficient information. Some residents of Conakry, however, have recently become more receptive to public information outreach efforts.
Seen here are social mobilisers meeting local residents of Kaloum, Conakry.
