Headline United Nations Peace Rug
Caption Description A view of the peace rug which hangs in the public lobby of the General Assembly building.
A needlepoint rug made by the American Needlepoint Guild was presented to Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim at a ceremony held at UN Headquarters on 23 October 1975. The gift, called the United Nations Peace Rug, consists of 138 squares, each measuring 16 inches, of the crest or coat of arms of the States which were United Nations Members at the time this project was completed. The centre square, measuring 32 inches, contains the United Nations seal. The rug, which has more than 9 million individual stitches, represents the work of 133 women and 5 men. It took more than two years to complete the rug.
