Headline Japan Presents New Silk Cord for Peace Bell
Caption Description In a ceremony at United Nations Headquarters today, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan, Mr. Masayoshi Kakitsubo, presented a new silk cord for the Peace Bell donated by his country to the United Nations. Colonel Alfred Katzin, Acting Head of the UN Office of Public Information, accepted the gift on behalf of the Secretary-General. The raw cord was again donated by Hayakawa, famous Japanese maker of bells, who molded the Peace Bell now standing outside the UN Conference Building.
Reverend Sodo Sokan Kawano, a high-ranking Buddhist priest of the Zen sect, is ringing the peace bell after the presentation of the new cord. The Reverend Kawano brought the cord to this country under the auspices of the Japanese Association for the United Nations. Mr. Masayoshi Kakitsubo, who presented the new silk cord, is seen at extreme left.
