UNKRA Aids Korea's Fishing Industry
Caption Description
The Korean fishing industry is second only to agriculture in the provision of food for the Korean people and is also a major source of foreign exchange. The industry has been severely contracted as a result of war destruction and unarrested deterioration. To rehabilitate the industry in all its phases, the U.N. Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA) has allocated $1,500,000 in 1954 to projects aimed at increased production of the country's second-ranking food, is aiding the ROK Government in a five-year boat-building program, has rebuilt the vital Seoul City Wholesale Fish Market, and extended loans and grants to fishermen and fishing organizations to help re-equip canneries and ice-making plants. At the Seoul City Wholsale Fish Market constructed by UNKRA and officially opened on 25 June 1954, from 50 to 70 tons of fish from many coastal points change hands each morning in a vigorous and colourful auction. The floor is covered with small islands of fish of many species as the auction begins, and two ours later is bare and clean, ready for a hosing and the next day's activity.
Photograph shows fish being auctioned at the market, with several bidders making notes as they place orders. [No exact date]
