Security Council Unanimously Decides to Include Russian and Spanish Among its Working Languages
Caption Description
The Security Council decided unanimously this morning to include Russian and Spanish among the working languages of the Council, and to amend the Council's provisional rules of procedure accordingly. The Council acted by adopting, without objection, a draft resolution sponsored jointly by Algeria, Colombia, Hungary, Pakistan, Senegal, the Soviet Union and Spain. The Soviet Union and Spain had requested that the Council meet for this purpose, in as much as the General Assembly had adopted a resolution on 21 December 1968, stating that the Assembly considers it desirable to include Russian and Spanish among the working languages of the Security Council.
Max Jakobson (Finland), President of the Council, is seen making a statement. Left to right, at the table: Julio Cesar Turbay-Ayala (Colombia), Secretary-General U Thant, Max Jakobson (Finland), F. Y. Chai, Director of the Security Council and Political Committees division, and Armand Berard (France).
